Benefits and costs

If your skills are recognised before you start training, you don’t have to be trained in things you already know. That makes study faster and a lot more interesting. It can help with job promotion, re-entry to the workforce or career change. It helps you identify gaps in your knowledge and skills so you know exactly what to learn to meet the requirements of a particular job or qualification.

If you are working, getting your skills recognised will benefit your employer as well. It helps them identify the skills in their organisation and find faster ways to build the skills they need in their workforce.

Registered Training Organisations usually charge a fee for your recognition claim to be assessed. Some may charge the usual enrolment fee for the subject or course you are seeking recognition for. When shopping around for an RTO, ask what their fee is for assessing skills recognition and what this includes. (They may refer to it as recognition of prior learning.)
